The Art of the Mission: Designing Your Team Patch
Ted Tagami from Magnitude.io explains the significance of mission patches in astronaut culture and how students can create their own symbols for the Virtual Astronaut Challenge. A mission patch serves as a memorable symbol that represents the core idea and goals of a specific journey into the final frontier.
[00:00:43] Every time a crew flies a mission into space, they wear a unique patch designed specifically for that journey. These patches are highly prized by astronauts and serve as a badge of pride for the entire mission team. For example, the ExoLab-8 and ExoLab-9 patches represent specific biological experiments conducted on the International Space Station (ISS).
Symbols and Storytelling
[00:02:11] Mission patches use visual metaphors to tell a story. Ted shares an example from a 2017 SpaceX Dragon mission where the patch was incredibly detailed, featuring the Dragon spacecraft, the ISS, and the Earth. However, not all patches need to be literal. One creative design featured an octopus to represent the eighth mission for a particular rocket.
[00:02:40] One of Ted’s favorite patches commemorates the first time the SpaceX Dragon successfully returned humans to Earth. These designs capture historic moments and help the team stay focused on their shared objective, whether it’s building a home on the Moon or growing plants in orbit.
Design Your Own Patch
[00:01:02] As part of the challenge, teams are encouraged to design their own mission patch that represents their unique vision for space exploration.
[00:01:31] When creating your patch, consider the following:
- Your Mission Goal: Is your team focused on lunar robotics, space medicine, or orbital farming?
- Symbolism: What animals, shapes, or colors represent your team’s strengths?
- History: How does your patch connect to previous space missions or your local community?
[00:02:54] Whether your mission is about building a sustainable lunar habitat or exploring the Martian surface, your patch should be a point of pride for your team. We look forward to seeing your creative ideas and how you represent your journey into the stars!
